Online Art Therapy

Counselling and Supervision

The Centre for Educational and Clinical Art Therapy (CECAT) provides one of the first online face-to-face art therapy services worldwide. The ability to work with pictures via webcam (using Skype) brings you a unique opportunity to experience art therapy regardless of where you live.

About Online Art Therapy, Counselling and Psychotherapy

Art therapy, counselling and psychotherapy are all about change. People may come for help because they feel there is something about themselves that is preventing them from living a fulfilling life, or it may be that they are in a situation that is difficult for them to cope with.

Unlike in ordinary counselling sessions, Robert often uses pictures, drawings and other creative expressions as part of his psychological intervention. By using art therapy unconscious material can surface. It is like diving to the bottom of an iceberg instead of exploring the tip that is visible.

No art skills required! Art therapy is not about creating works of art but giving you another means of expressing yourself. Using a live video set up enables the art therapist to work with your pictures online. After the online session is finished, you may be asked to do a drawing in your own time and review it in your next session. This will give you time to complete your picture at your own pace.

The code of conduct of the Australian Psychological Society and the Australian and New Zealand Art Therapy Association applies at all times and guarantees you a high standard of professionalism and care.

About Online Supervision

Due to time constraints and difficulties with travel arrangements for receiving clinical supervision of client work, the provision of online supervision can be an effective alternative.

In his work as a clinical supervisor Robert has a commitment to be supportive, accessible, and approachable. He also places a strong emphasis on developing a good working relationship with supervisees in which there is an ethical alliance. But one that also provides the space to be flexible and creative in exploring clients' work and the therapeutic relationship. As a psychodynamic trained art therapist and psychologist, he is also interested in personal information, your role and experiences as a counsellor/ art therapist and unconscious material such as projections and countertransferences.

How does Online Art Therapy work?

You make an appointment with Robert by sending him an e-mail briefly describing your concerns or topic of interest, and he will be in touch via email to arrange an appropriate time for you to meet online. At your appointed time, you begin your session. You are able to see and hear each other using your computers.

What equipment do I need?

Currently, the best software for live chat to ensure utmost confidentiality appears to be Skype. Skype is cost free, high quality, and is quick and easy to download and install. With Skype you can either type, talk, or talk and see each other via a webcam.

You need a computer with Internet access, a headset and a webcam. Skype is a free video conferencing program that allows you to see and hear each other, including the pictures, and can be downloaded off the Internet (www.skype.com).

Art Therapy Session Payment

The first online art therapy and counselling session (30 min.) will be free of charge, so we can get to know each other, see if the technology is working to your satisfaction and to enable Robert to assess if he can be of any help to you.

Payment is required prior to each further on-line art therapy or supervision session. Secure payment options will be emailed to you.
